There are a few pieces of work here that could help me with visualising a design ambition for a few briefs.
Firstly Johnny is a going to be creating a series of illustrations for a history of music technology and interface publication. As a collaboration I will have the job of laying down type. This brief is not due to be under way for some time. This objectified brief has realised the kind of design I thought would be appropriate to apply to the subject matter. A very clinical and accessible use of type that backs up the image, but also detaches itself from the content. THe illustrations should be the show case and the interesting feature. The typography is merely a vessel in this context. Clear, objective and un-ambiguous, a Modernist ideology.
I received a brief yesterday (Jan 26th) for a quick turn around poster design to promote a discussion on climate change. This rather nice visual style looks as though it could have been created using type forms. It hasn't as it turns out, but playing with the idea of creating natural forms using type would be fun exercise and could potentially be a strong eye catching, friendly design.
The turn around for this brief is 3 days, better get working on it then!
Last module I was looking at the work of Sabdra Zahirovic for her interesting use of cutting, folding and manipulation of paper with a direct impact on the printed type on the pages. This Dylan design has a lovely finish for one, and also conceptually references the acoustic and electronic duality of style within Dylan's music.
I am not sure for which brief this would be an appropriate solution, but then again I do not want to think in terms of re-appropriation of a 'style.' So instead I will just have it here as a constant reminder that paper folding is a powerful tool.
