Cancún Debate : After the Crit

I have been signing up with the same group of people for the past few crits.  They are all print based and have seen the gradual development of my work.  We have had a good dialogue and all engage well together.  This results in good honest feedback that we take as professional advice rather that a group of friends.  Our tone of voice is direct and aware of other implications that may have affected where we are at.

The Good feedback was:
·      The layouts are solid, especially the bold pages.  The message really hits home in a fairly commercial clear way, but still has intelligent design.  The main body copy pages are neat and orderly, creating a clear contrast between the more in depth information and the bold general informative pages.  This is something I was aiming to achieve as some people at the event would want to read all the information and all the figures, while some will just need an overview on which to base their own opinions.  Such is the nature of a debate.

·      The colour is relevant, in that it is not explicitly a natural colour, but does clearly have connotations of water and sky, who of the main issues discussed within the event.  However this idea of water and sky may need to be embellished.  I will consider using imagery to help push this along.  Recent research into a case study has brought about the idea that I should let go of the aesthetic of minimalism in order to communicate more coherently with my audience.

·      The balance of the publication was good, a dynamic mix up of bold and informative pages.  I am glad I succeeded here as this is what makes publications interesting.

·      The flier is very successful, the format makes the information accessible and engaging to read.  Also the cover is conceptually strong with the concept of asking questions.  Can / Cún & Can we agree on funds.  However like the publication and the poster the use of imagery may make it more accessible in terms of a continuity across the range.

Bad Feedback:
·      While the poster was neatly layed out with a solid understanding of hierarchy and grids it lacked identity and play.  Something that is important when engaging the public.  At present it is more design for design sake, with a concept generally backing up the design but not being engaging enough for its target audience.

·      The flier could be more interesting, not in term of layout but in the application of imagery and possibly more than one colour.  However I am keen to keep it just one colour as well as a dark grey for the text.  As it is a piece of work about environmental awareness it seems obvious not to go crazy with multiple images.

·      The invitation is too big and ungainly.  I knew this already, I jut couldn’t get the size right, however I think I have cracked that now.  Basically it needs to be half the size.  The fold is simple but is consistent in concept with the flier.  This should also be applied to the banner and further promotion.

·      The serif typeface is too sharp and contrasting with the Franchise bold sans serif face.  So I will consider an alternative or getting rid of it all together.  I do not want to loose it completely as it helps add the air of intellectual debate which is key to targeting the appropriate audience.

So there is a fair bit to consider now, but a day or two in de-directing the concept and making it more clear for the audience will be fruitful.
Main considerations are: Colour, Typeface Choice, Format, Deliverables.

Fine Art Yearbook : Final Layout Tweaks

We are down to final tweaks now, just making sure the type alignment is spot on between headers and body copy as well as placing in the front and back inside cover information. This includes touring information, acknowledgments and of course our own details. Nice…

After this we printed off all of the spreads, not bound, so that they could have a final proof read and check with the Fine Art reps. This will be our last meeting before print most likely, unless they want to meet up and tlak about further promotion. They mentioned that they want a poster, and will probably also realise they want fliers. Fun times.

Flatland : All that Development

One thing I am terrible at is keeping development work.  Not so great for ticking boxes, but it saves my Mac having to deal with all that extra information.  Silly really as this is a degree, but I strongly dislike having a back catalogue of development work.  As a result my development for this brief is a bit patchy.

For example we had a whole load of physical tests and mock ups at one stage, lost between mine and Vickie’s draws and the studio mess no doubt. Not sure what to do about that really. I’m not going to make incomplete design and reprint it, that’s just redundant.

Jo made the point that it is good to have a bank of good ideas and development to either recycle or base new idea upon.  This is certainly a good way of going about things, something to think about for the future.

Cancún Debate : Publication Development

I am not sure about the front and back inside cover pages. The photography is gentle and sets the tone of calm debate. However the use of Franchise seems to cheapen the introduction. Originally I had used Garamond, but it was too formal. I have now changed the serif typeface to Georgia which has rounder serifs and is less formal, but still intellectual.
Other than that I am happy with the spreads and their order. I am now considering sending it to print.

Fine Art Yearbook : Further Layout Development

We have been provided with some revised images for a few of the artists so some new spreads needed laying out. We got together as a group to do these so we could quickly make decisions and move on to the next. The new photos are so much better than the old ones which is great news as they were letting the book down a little. We are all really happy with the Fine Art folks, they have been really on top of things and as a result we have been able to get to a near finalised stage ahead of what was projected. Thanks guys.

Cancún Debaten : Publication Spreads Development

Here are a bunch of spreads that I am considering for the final design stage.  I can see that some are not working as spreads, the movement is just not correct.

These pages that are heavy in text are slightly easier as the nature of them is to be informative over aesthetic and concept.  So the main detailing lies in balance, accuracy and articulation.  Things to be aware of are type weight relationships 2:1 with headers and 1.5:1 with upper and lowercase body copy and sub headers.

The rulers help guide the reader to the pieces of information that are linked.  While there are also vertical rulers that are 0.4mm in weight that run just inside the gutter.  These separate different areas of the same topic.  This is the first time I have user vertical rulers, I am confident that in the publication they will sit well and will aid the clarity and not confuse it.

Fixing the past and the future..hmmm, no I am not a fn of these spreads at all, they are not typographic and work only on one level of meaning.  I need to re-visit this spread.

A little a lot is a really embracing page.  I only had one layout solution for this, but it was the obvious direction and it is effective, grabs attention and emphasises the point that there is a lot of money needed.  Not in gold though.  A gold Foil would be great here, but I just don’t think it would be an effective use of my time to foil something just now.

I prefer the double spread for the Under One Roof spread. The dynamics of the layout across one page just does not have the same effect and is not in keeping with the other similar pages.

Building Sea Walls also needs to be re-thought.  It is too ambiguous at the moment.  The clarity of the message needs to be more straight forward.

Cancún Debate : Flier Development

I have put this into one post because I not think it is worth spacing out across several.  There has been a lot of development of format, but they were fairly pathetic by comparison.
Basically I had some time at home over Easter to get my teeth into the concept and came up with this folding method that allows for a very flexible layout as well as the application of the concept which is ‘Opening up Questions’  such as ‘Can we agree on funds’ Can Cancún make a significant impact’ or for the invitation ‘Can you attend?
When I made this format I did not feel the need to try anything else. It worked conceptually and aesthetically, and in an intellectual manner for the audience.

The introduction of using imagery and more colour is clearly a good idea.  I had a small one on one chat with Tim and he suggested trying a gradient, on top of that I used the image of the sea waves.  This was a cool moment, because if I put the gradient from top to bottom it looked like the sea, and if I flipped it made it look like rolling hills.  This links back to the discussion event topics of sea and sky.  Nicely done.

The switch of typeface to Franchise for the front of the flier also makes the event more approachable for a potentially wider audience, not just the intellectual folk.
